Johnston County hosted its second public meeting for the Comprehensive Greenways & Trails Plan on August 7, 2025. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for residents, officials, and stakeholders to learn about the latest developments, review route recommendations, and share feedback as the Plan continues to take shape.
Major Highlights from the Meeting
The Comprehensive Greenways & Trails Plan is designed to connect Johnston County’s neighborhoods, parks, schools, and destinations with a safe, accessible network of greenways and trails. This ambitious project is guided by extensive public input, and meetings like this one are key moments for the community’s voice to be heard.
At the August meeting, participants saw updates on proposed route corridors, how different routes were scored and evaluated, and the typical design sections under consideration. The open-house format encouraged attendees to ask questions and directly share ideas and concerns with planners and consultants. Such engagement ensures the final plan reflects the vision and priorities of all county residents.
Why Greenways & Trails Matter
Johnston County’s leaders are championing this project as a foundation for healthier living, better outdoor connectivity, and greater access to recreation. The vision is to provide new ways to walk, bike, and explore nature—including linking to regional trail networks such as the East Coast Greenway and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
Building and expanding greenways and trails will:
Promote active lifestyles and wellness.
Safely connect communities to popular destinations.
Boost tourism and economic opportunities.
Preserve and showcase local natural resources.
Continued Involvement
The Comprehensive Greenways & Trails Plan team continues to welcome public input. Residents are invited to participate in future meetings and contribute via online surveys and interactive maps. Updates are made regularly as new milestones are reached, and everyone is encouraged to stay engaged as Johnston County works to bring its trail vision to life.
