Bringing together leaders from 15 counties to shape a bold three-year vision for connected, inclusive, and sustainable trails.
On March 4th, 2025, the Triangle Trails Initiative (TTI) brought together a powerhouse of regional minds for a full-day Strategic Planning Meeting aimed at defining the next chapter of trail development and engagement across North Carolina. Held from 9am to 3pm, this milestone event welcomed 80 attendees from across 15 counties, including Planning Directors, Parks and Recreation leaders, non-profit organizations, private sector partners, and representatives from NC State Parks.
The goal? To collaborate, align, and build the organizational structure that will guide TTI for the next three years.
The highlight of the day came from guest speaker Dr. David Tillman, professor at Campbell University, whose team infused the event with a burst of creative energy. With a Mardi Gras-themed setup, Dr. Tillman helped turn what could have been a standard planning session into a dynamic and inspired experience. The festive atmosphere energized participants and set the tone for bold thinking and meaningful dialogue.
Through structured engagement and breakout discussions, Dr. Tillman’s team helped attendees identify four key focus areas for TTI to consider moving forward:
Regional Marketing & Branding
Regionally-Connected Network of Trails
Succession & Leadership Development
Growing the Diversity of Trail Users
These focus areas are still under review, as 30 participants from the meeting have been selected to help guide Phase 2 of the strategic planning process. Their task: to dig deeper into these concepts and help prioritize the top three pillars that will shape TTI’s future direction.
With strong regional collaboration, inclusive leadership, and creative vision at the core, Triangle Trails Initiative is paving the way—literally and figuratively—for a stronger, more connected future of trails across North Carolina.
